Daniela,a graduate in Cultural and Tourism Geography (VUW New Zealand,University of Trier and Bonn,Germany),worked previously in research and business development roles at HEI in Germany,New Zealand and the UK,as an events and tourism consultant and tourism management lecturer. Daniela joined the RSA in 2013,bringing wide-ranging international conference management experiences,academic networks and a strong entrepreneurial approach to the Association. Daniela’s job portfolio includes the RSA’s membership,academic journals,territorial networks,marketing,conferences/events and the HQ Office’s Management.

 

Judy Pepper

Judy Pepper: Finance Executive

Judy completed a BA (Hons) in Finance and Accounting at the University of East London. She then worked as a trainee accountant at an international freight forwarders,and then completed her examinations,qualifying as an ACCA accountant in 1996. She then worked for 14 years in various roles for The Emcor group,(which was a major contractor in the construction industry,and managed facilities services for clients including British Airways). Since moving to Sussex,Judy has worked in a number of contract accountant roles,including working for a publishing and events organisation and the Audit commission. Most recently she worked as Finance Manager for a charity in Eastbourne,where her work included responsibility for managing grants,legacies and fundraising.

 

Klára Sobeková

Klára Sobeková: Communication and Grants Officer

Klára joined the RSA in August 2016. Her academic background is in European studies and European integration with a specialisation in Central and Eastern Europe. In previous roles,she worked in Brussels for the European Committee of the Regions and the representation of Prešov region. In addition,she has also worked at the EU-office of Chemnitz in Germany. Her job portfolio at the RSA includes communication,marketing and the administration of the RSA’s grant schemes.

 

Lesa Reynolds

Lesa Reynolds: Project Manager (Membership and Conferences)

Lesa has worked at the Regional Studies Association since February 2012; arriving with over 20 years of experience in events and conferences management for a variety of organisations in London and the South East,covering disciplines such as fashion and education as well as those concerned with important governmental issues. Lesa made an immediate impact by ensuring that the Association’s inaugural conference in China (2012) and more recently in Brazil (2014) both became resounding triumphs; which have since paved the way for the RSA’s subsequent territorial expansion in ‘Asia Pacific’ and ‘Latin America’. Lesa is also an integral part of the team that initially implemented the RSA’s database investment into its online membership and conferences portal and the system’s continued improvement and development; both of which have contributed to the overall growth and success of the Association.

 

Ren Qing

Ren Qing: China Division Officer and Editorial Assistant for Area Development and Policy

Ren Qing joined the Regional Studies Association China Division in March 2015 as Development and Editorial Officer. Her portfolios in China Division office mainly include membership management,China Division’s communications including website and social media,promotional activities,and assisting the Chair of China Division to make sure everything runs smoothly. And also as the editorial assistant for the journal Area Development and Policy,she works mainly on communication with the Editorial Team,Editorial Advisory Board,and authors,manuscript management through ScholarOne system,and clerical and administrative matters. Ren Qing graduated from Capital Normal University,China,with a BA in English Education and a MA in Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. She worked previously as the Administrative Secretary for the Center for Sustainable Development Research of Chinese Academy of Sciences from 2009 to 2011,and as an editor and English teacher in New Oriental Education & Technology Group from 2011 to 2015. She notes that “It’s my honor and pleasure to join the RSA team,and I’m proud of having the opportunity to grow with the new journal ADP as well as RSA China Division.”

 

Sally Hardy

Sally Hardy: Chief Executive

Sally Hardy began her career at the Economic and Social Research Council where she worked as a Scientific Officer in the Industry and Employment Committee dispensing funding to UK based social science academics. Sally moved to the Regional Studies Association where she has been CEO for just over 25 years. She has developed the organisation from a small,UK focused organisation into a global Association with an international footprint. Sally has become an advocate on publishing issues for the learned society sector speaking regularly at national conferences and events. She has advocated on different aspects of Open Access - for journals as well as for monographs and also around copy right reform and educational exceptions. She speaks on publishing practice and particularly on how to grow impact from publishing activity and on issues of learned society strategy.

 

Suede Stanton-Drudy

Suede Stanton-Drudy: Territorial Networks Officer

Suede joined the Regional Studies Association in May 2016. She holds a Bachelor of Languages and Bachelor of Laws (Hons I). She has worked as a solicitor in private practice in Australia and England,specialising in Immigration Law. Her job role is to assist with the development of the Centres Programme and the Territorial Networks. Suede enjoys dancing,reading and practising Buddhism. Somehow she manages to fit them in around her two adorable but demanding young children and adorable but demanding musician husband.

 

Wanda Miczorek

Wanda Miczorek: Events and Membership Officer

Wanda joined the Regional Studies Association in August 2015 as Membership and Events Officer. She focuses on conferences and membership matters,making sure everything runs smoothly and the Association continues to grow. Previously,Wanda worked with the Erasmus Student Network in Sweden and in student associations in Sweden and Poland promoting urban studies. She took part in NGO projects in Poland focusing on environmental protection and regional development. Wanda graduated from the Faculty of Geography at the University of Warsaw with a BA in Spatial Planning. She is currently finishing her Master dissertation. Wanda is interested in environmental aspects of urban planning and transport issues in metropolitan areas.

Mia Gray: Secretary

Mia's first interest is in labour markets and the social and organisational dynamics of work. She is interested in how labour markets are shaped,structured and regulated. She works at the intersection of political economy,and economic and labour geographies. Her research explores processes of labour market change,geographies of organised labour,immigrant workers,skill formation and diffusion of knowledge,and social networks in the workplace. In particular,She is interested in how categories of social difference like gender,race,age,and class relate to how labour is rewarded,valued and regulated.

Jessie P.H. Poon is Professor of Geography at the University at Buffalo,New York. She is currently an editor of Environment and Planning A. She was the North American editor of Papers in Regional Science from 2002 to 2006. She has published widely on multinational firms’ locational strategies in Asia,foreign direct investment,multinational firms' locational strategies,and technological upgrading dynamics in Asia.

 

John Shutt: Vice Chair,Publications and Chair,Publications Committee

Professor Shutt is Professor of Employment and Regional development at Leeds Business School,Leeds  Beckett University,United Kingdom. He is also a Visiting Professor at CURDS,Newcsastle University and at the College of Management,Zheijang University of Technology,Hangzhou,China. John has worked for local,regional,national and European governments. He has directed the European centre at Leeds Business School (ERBEDU) and was deputy Director of the Centre for Local Economic Strategies(CLES) the local economic think tank in Manchester. He has recently completed research assignments in China,South Africa and the United States as well as Europe. He is currently undertaking research on place based development and Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPS) in the North of England and on the implementation of European Union Regional Policy 2014-2020. John teaches on the Leeds MBA and Masters in Regeneration and Urban Management and the Masters in International Trade and Finance.

Since January 2013,Ron Boschma is Full Professor in Innovation Studies at Lund University in Sweden. He is also Full Professor in Regional Economics at the Department of Economic Geography at the Faculty of Geosciences,University of Utrecht. He has widely published in international journals on Evolutionary Economic Geography,the spatial evolution of industries,regional systems of innovation,the structure and evolution of networks,agglomeration externalities and regional growth.

Professor John Bachtler is Professor of European Policy Studies and a Director of the European Policies Research Centre. Sarah Ayres: Treasurer

Sarah Ayres is a 'Reader in Public Policy and Governance' at the University of Bristol,UK. Her central research interest is the governance of place,space and territory. This core provides the basis for two main strands of work. First,her research is concerned with devolution and decentralisation in both a UK and an international context,with a particular emphasis on analysing inter-governmental relations between central government and local actors. Second,it has explored the role of partnership working and network management in the governance of territory. Sarah is a political scientist with expertise in public administration and theories of policy making. Her research is concerned with territorial and collaborative governance - how actors from state,market and civil society coalesce and work with one another in specific localities. Ivan Turok: Editor-in-Chief,Regional Studies

Professor Ivan Turok is Executive Director of the Economic Performance and Development Programme at the Human Sciences Research Council in South Africa. He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal ‘Regional Studies’ and Honorary Professor at the Universities of Cape Town and Glasgow. He is also Chairman of the City Planning Commission for eThekwini (Durban). Ivan is a regular adviser to the United Nations,OECD,European Commission and several national governments. He is a member of the Expert Panel set up by the SA Government to prepare an Urban Policy for the country. He is the author of over 150 academic publications,journal articles,book chapters and books on urban and regional economics and development. He also wrote the 2011 State of South African Cities Report and was co-author of the 2006 State of English Cities Report.
